OK, all movies ever made are lost in some technological blunder. Except 2 series... they're the only 2 left on Earth and all you could ever watch again (because of course, the same blunder causes mankind to forget how to make movies)
Would you rather watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy over and over for the rest of your life, or the Star Wars movies?
So this poll is...
Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
vs.
A New Hope
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith

I'm surprised this is even close. I couldn't stand the LOTR movies, but love the SW movies.

Well, I grew up on Star Wars.. it was the perfect time to get me hooked because I was 5 when the first one came out. I thought nothing could come close, but my buddy at the time who's also a Star Wars nut, saw LOTR (Fellowhip) and said he actually liked it more than Star Wars (!!!) I thought he was on crack, and that nothing could touch SW. After repeatedly watching all the extended versions of LOTR I've gotta say - it's a close call.
I will admit there's a lot of crap that could be deleted from LOTR (basically all of Liv Tyler's scenes which just put you to sleep), but Attack of the Clones had a similar amount of junk that could have been cut (the love story between Hayden and Natalie... needed for the storyline but not to that extent).
But c'mon - Luke, Han, R2, Vader, Boba Fett, IG88 and all the other figures I had... LOTR just can't top that stuff. They're very close, but Star Wars is still the best set of movies ever produced.

Its a tuff one 4 me.
Being a big time Sci-fi fan star wars was just the ticket........ Till about the 3rd one, then it got old for some reason.
Read the hobbit in my late teens then the triology then any other book I could find by Tolken.
When the movie came out many many moons later I figured it would be a dud ...... I Was Wrong.
I Loved It
Voted for LOTR :)

Star Wars is the biggest pile of over-rated rubbish around. LOTR is by far a superior film. The effects are amazing, the stroy is brilliant and the acting is top notch. The only thing Star Wars has going for it is Natalie Portman!

Hehe, I can tell you're too young to be a TRUE Star Wars fan :)
Whenever the 'original' SW fans think Star Wars, they think Luke Skywalker and Han Solo (the original 3 movies come to mind first) - not Natalie Portman (the last 3 movies) :p
BUt I'm not arguing with you - everyone has their own favorites/likes/dislikes.
... although I will admit that Peter Jackson didn't have to do as much as George Lucas - Jackson already had the story written and waiting for him. For me it's very close between these 2 franchises.

When I was growing up Star Wars was the most incredible thing i had ever seen. I still think it is better than the new 3. Me and all my friends were in love with Princess Lea.
LOTR has amazing cinematography also.

For sure! (about the 1st 3). The last 3 were more "Hollywood'ish" ... and way too much CG. Nothing beats the models they used back in the original three. No matter how well the CG is done, you can still tell it's CG. Models and costumes are better than blue screens and CG characters any day.
...not to mention all the great merchandise the first three had :)

No question--LOTR! The acting, the special effects, the script, the costuming, the music, etc. Superior in every way. Obi Wan Kenobi is a stereotype, whereas Gandalf is a fully realized character, more complex even than Yoda. Aragorn is so much more impressive than either Anakin or Han Solo. Eowyn eclipses Leia the way Arwen totally outshines Amidala. Frankly, Luke Skywalker never shows half the courage, personal growth or suffering that Pippin does, much less Frodo or Sam! Nor does the vision of Anakin-turned-Darth Vader have more than a few drops of the drama of Smeagol-turned-Gollum! (As far as virtual characters go, let us dismiss Jar Jar altogether).
Palpatine is more impressive than Sauron, I give you that. But certainly Christopher Lee has a much juicier role as Saruman than as Count Dooku. Meanwhile, there are all those secondary villains! The Wtich King versus Darth Maul? No contest. Boba Fett versus Gothmog or Lurtz? Who has an army at their disposal thank you very much? Any one of countless imperial flunkies as opposed to Grima Wormtongue? OH, puh-leeze! Brad Dourif created a full, complex and vivid character, not a wind-up toy.
Even The Empire Strikes Back (easily the best SW film) compares poorly to the least good LOTR flick, namely The Return of the King.

Not a fair comparison; the Lord of the Rings is based on a book, and Star Wars is an original film from scratch. Someone who was/is a fan of J.J.R. Tolkien is bound to be biased.
